Bad
beat jackpots or progressive jackpots are offered in many casinos including online card rooms. Of course, there are
advantages and disadvantages to consider when choosing between a jackpot and non-jackpot game.
Some of the advantages to jackpot poker include:
• Jackpot games allow micro to middle limit players to play for huge sums of money, often hundreds of thousands of
dollars, on a limited bankroll.
• Jackpots are typically progressive, which means they grow every second until they are hit. No matter how big the
jackpot grows, the jackpot collection remains the same. This makes them ideal for “cherry pickers” (players who only play
when the jackpot is large).
• Jackpots encourage loose play, especially when the jackpot is large, making the game better. Many players will become
married to their “jackpot hands,” and will chase small to middle suited connectors and middle pairs when they do not have
pot odds to do so.
• Jackpots payout “table shares” to all players who do not have a jackpot hand, but were dealt in on a jackpot hand.
These “table shares” can amount to tens of thousands of dollars, simply for being dealt in on a jackpot hand.
When deciding whether jackpot poker is right for you, you also need to consider some of the disadvantages:
• The house will collect an additional amount to the rake from each qualifying hand in order to fund the jackpot. This
will negatively affect your short term hourly win/loss rate.
• The house collects its fee from the jackpot on the back end, taking 10% when the jackpot is hit. This can amount to
tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the size of the jackpot. But if you compare it to the 50%-80% rake on your
local or state lottery, 10% is comparatively cheap.
Depending on the establishment, the requirements and rules will change.
Absolute Poker is just one place where you
can participate in jackpot games. To get a general idea of how jackpots work, I am going to use Absolute's Bad Beat
Progressive Jackpots as an example. Most jackpots games will be similar, but you will need to check the requirements of
the card room you are playing in before taking a seat.
When playing at the online cardroom, Absolute Poker, a jackpot occurs when a player with four eights or better is beaten
by a better hand. However, there are several qualifying conditions and all of them must be met in order for the jackpot
to be valid.
The qualifying conditions are as follows:
1. Both hole cards must play in both hands. Here are a couple examples of a both a valid jackpot and a hand that does not
qualify.
Player “A” holds 88, player “B” holds 99. The board reads 889K9. Player “A” has four eights with a king kicker, player
“B” has four nines with a king kicker. This is a valid jackpot, provided all the necessary conditions are met.
Player “A” holds QdJs Player “B” holds 5s6s. The board reads 7s8s9sTs3d. Player “A” has a jack high straight flush, but
this hand does not qualify, because only one hole card plays- the jack of spades. Player “B” has a Ten high straight
flush, but this hand does not qualify either, because only one hole card plays- the six of spades. Remember, both hole
cards must play in both hands.
2. There must be a showdown, with both jackpot hands live on the river.
3. Only players dealt into the jackpot hand will be awarded “table shares.” Players who are sitting out or who are between
the blinds and the button waiting to play are not eligible.
4. When two or more jackpots occur simultaneously, the hand that started first will be awarded the jackpot.
5. If more than two players have qualifying hands, the highest two hands will receive the larger shares and the lower
qualifying hand(s) will receive table shares.
6. Collusion of any form, including, but not limited to disclosing the content of a hand or directing players on how to
act, will void the jackpot.
7. A rake of $.25 or more must be collected and four players or more must be dealt in for the jackpot to be valid.
On jackpot tables, when the rake reaches $.25 or more, the house will collect an additional $.50 in order to fund the
jackpot. When the jackpot hits, 65% of the progressive jackpot will be paid out. 25% will go to seed the next progressive
jackpot, and 10% will go to the house as vigorish.
The payout will be distributed as follows. The qualifying winning hand will receive 25% plus the pot. The losing hand
will receive 50% of the payout. The remaining 25% will be split equally amongst the players who were dealt in, as a
“table share.” Keep in mind that only 65% of the total jackpot will be paid out.
